Stand before one of the largest hydroelectric dams on Earth. A marvel of engineering that generates enough energy to power the world for 40 days. It’s not just concrete and steel; it’s a monument to human ambition.
You can read the statistics—7.9 million cubic meters of concrete, enough to build 210 football stadiums—but numbers don’t capture the feeling. Standing at the base of the Itaipu Dam makes you feel small. It is a humbling reminder of the power of the Paraná River.
But Itaipu is a high-security facility shared by two countries (Paraguay and Brazil). The visitation rules are strict, the schedules are rigid, and the Visitor Center is located far from Asunción (approx. 5 hours).
We turn a logistical challenge into a smooth adventure. We drive you directly to the Visitor Center in Hernandarias, handling all the ID registrations and ticket scheduling for you.
You won’t be stuck deciphering Portuguese or Spanish instructions at the gate. We ensure you get on the right internal bus, see the best viewpoints, and understand the incredible history of how Paraguay and Brazil united to tame the river.
We arrive at the Visitor Center, where a documentary film sets the stage. You learn about the construction in the 1970s—a project so massive it changed the geography of the continent.
We board the official dam transport to tour the exterior. The bus stops at the central lookout point. Here, you have the perfect view of the spillway. On a lucky day when the sluice gates are open, the roar of the water is deafening and the spray creates constant rainbows.
We drive across the top of the dam wall. To your left, the massive reservoir (Lake Itaipu) stretches to the horizon like an ocean. To your right, the river drops over 100 meters down. You are literally driving on the border between Paraguay and Brazil.
Itaipu is far from the capital. We provide a premium vehicle for the long drive. We can also combine this tour with a visit to the Monday Falls (Saltos del Monday) nearby, maximizing your day in the East.
The technical details of hydroelectricity can be confusing in a foreign language. Your guide helps explain how the energy is divided between the countries and why this dam is the “battery” of Paraguay.
Traveling to the border region (Ciudad del Este) can be chaotic due to traffic and commerce. We know the roads, the safe stopping points, and how to navigate the busy Triple Frontier area smoothly.
Duration: Full Day (approx. 12 hours) from Asunción.
Departure: 5:30 AM or 6:00 AM.
Requirements: Passport is mandatory for entry to the plant (even though we don’t cross to Brazil, it is a binational security zone).
Clothing: Closed shoes are required for the Technical Tour. No flip-flops allowed inside.
Transport: Private SUV.
We believe that a great experience starts with clear communication. Traveling to a new country involves many details, and we want you to feel 100% confident before you book. Below, we have answered the most common questions travelers ask us regarding our safety standards, logistics, and service quality. If you don’t see your question here, we are just a message away.
No. We visit the Paraguayan side of the dam. As long as you have your valid passport (which is required for entry to the facility), no visa is needed because we do not legally exit Paraguay.
This specific tour focuses on the Paraguayan side. However, if you have the appropriate visa for Brazil, we can customize the trip to drop you off at the border, but our standard vehicle service stays in Paraguay.
It depends on your interest. The Panoramic is best for photography and seeing the scale. The Technical is best for engineers or those curious about the machinery. The Technical tour has a minimum age limit (14 years old).
We cannot guarantee this. The spillway only opens when the reservoir level is high (usually during the rainy season or simply depending on grid demand). Even without the water flowing, the concrete structure is awe-inspiring.
Ciudad del Este is a massive shopping hub. If you want to shop, we can add a stop, but please note that traffic there is very heavy and it will extend the day significantly. We recommend a dedicated day for shopping if that is your priority.
Yes, the Panoramic tour is very safe and family-friendly. The internal Technical tour is restricted to ages 14+.
No. We stop at a restaurant in Hernandarias or Ciudad del Este. There are excellent Brazilian-style steakhouses (Churrasquerías) in the area which we highly recommend.
Comfortable clothes. Important: If you choose the Technical (Internal) tour, you must wear pants (no shorts/skirts) and closed-toed shoes (no sandals/heels) for safety regulations.
