San Bernardino Trip

San Bernardino – The Summer Capital

Visit San Bernardino, Paraguay’s historic summer town. Explore German colonial history, taste the famous "Bollos," and enjoy a sunset over Lake Ypacaraí.

Escape to the Capital of Summer

For over a century, “San Ber” has been the retreat for dreamers and poets. Founded by German immigrants and embraced by Paraguayans, this lakeside town offers colonial charm, legendary sunsets, and a pace of life that invites you to slow down.

Where History Meets the Lake

San Bernardino is more than just a town; it is a memory. It is the smell of blooming Jasmine in the streets and the taste of sugary Bollos (German donuts).

Located just an hour from Asunción, it feels like a different world. The streets are lined with historic villas, the air is fresher, and the rhythm is dictated by the sun and the lake. Whether you want to explore the roots of German colonization or simply sit by a pier with a cold drink, San Ber is the perfect pause button.

A Relaxing Day, Perfectly Planned

In the summer season, San Bernardino can be chaotic with traffic and parking. We take the stress out of the equation.

We provide door-to-door transport from Asunción, so you don’t have to fight for a parking spot. We act as your historical guide, showing you the hidden corners of the “Historic Center” that most tourists miss while rushing to the beach. We know where the best pastries are hidden and where to find the best view of the sunset.

The Journey

The German Legacy

We start by walking through history. We visit the legendary Hotel del Lago, a place full of myths and stories (and guests ranging from Presidents to controversial historical figures). We explore the “Colonist’s Square” to understand how German families built this town from the jungle in 1881.

The Sweetest Stop (The Bollos)

You cannot visit San Ber without eating a Bollo. These are traditional German donuts filled with dulce de leche or guava jam. We take you to the most traditional bakeries—the ones the locals swear by—to taste this piece of culinary heritage.

The Panoramic View

We drive up to the Mirador Bella Vista (The Lookout). From here, the view opens up, and you can see the vastness of Lake Ypacaraí and the green hills of the Cordillera. It is the defining photo of the trip.

Sunset by the Lake

We end the day at the waterfront (The Ciclovía or a lakeside club). We find a comfortable spot to watch the sun dip below the horizon, painting the water in shades of orange and purple.

FAQ

We believe that a great experience starts with clear communication. Traveling to a new country involves many details, and we want you to feel 100% confident before you book. Below, we have answered the most common questions travelers ask us regarding our safety standards, logistics, and service quality. If you don’t see your question here, we are just a message away.

The water quality of Lake Ypacaraí changes constantly due to algae. In recent years, swimming has often been restricted. We treat this as a "sightseeing and boating" lake rather than a "swimming" lake. If swimming is your priority, we can add a stop at a local pool club or visit Salto Cristal instead.

It is about 45km. Without traffic, it takes 1 hour. On summer weekends, traffic can double that time, which is why we recommend traveling with a driver who knows the alternative routes.
